Matts Training Split Works – 4 Simple Sessions A Week
Yo Warriors,
I was sent a message this week saying about the training posts that I sent out on Sunday, asking why there are 4 and why they’re all different.
I post 4 brand new workouts each week on here for free so that everyone has something to have a go with.
Anyways, all the information that he’s looked into tells him to disregard my approach and do others advice – multiple strength days, focusing on the same lifts every session, etc.
Great message but I want to clarify why I do it my way.
FIRSTLY, this is my training.
I’m just giving out my method to everyone to join in.
The reason that I don’t promote all those other methods is because I don’t do them.
On the back of that, I’m training to be the best at a combative sport which has very little specific training information out there.
AND I’m training to make sure I continue to be a functional human being.
Secondly, I’m a busy guy, so 4x half hour sessions a week is the maximum I can get in on a busy week.
I’ll do more sometimes but 4 is the basic.
Thirdly, why different sessions?
Because I get bored, because I’m not just focusing on a single lift, because I need each session to focus on something different.
NOTE
There is an overriding focus throughout all the sessions that I need to mention: motor-pathways.
ie, the electrical pathways in the body that dictates how good you are at skills. The more I can practice and build, the more capable I am across the board. If I focus on one skill constantly, I get really good at it but not that great at anything else.
Heres the explanations:
- Body Prep
These sessions are about building strength in the joints through full ranges of motion as these can be inherently missed with the other training throughout the week.
I change exercises every session here, contrary to most strength programs, because I do get bored doing the same ones week-in-week-out and yet I still improve my strength.
This also helps improve my coordination and motor pathways. - Locomotion/Cardio drills
Mostly, this is about running.
Getting good at long distance/duration locomotion is always beneficial to the human body.
The goal is to be able to maintain a steady pace throughout the time allowance by making sure my breathing rate is slightly elevated.
If I’m indoors, I’ll do the indoor drill BUT still focusing on the breathing rate. - Battle Drills
My focus here is about skills that are directly relatable to battling – thats fighting combinations and foot work.
I want to get my combinations correct and the footwork drills correct to help build those motor-pathways to make me a more capable warrior.
Again, there is a cardio element here, so I”m trying to maintain an elevated breathing rate as a secondary goal.
Drills first, Cardio second. - Environmental Drills/Skills
How the body works in the real world is the idea.
Again, looking to build motor-pathways first and making it cardio vascular second.
In this session we look at moving the body through the environment, and the environment around the body – crawling, lifting, climbing, etc.
Building actual skills that can translate to the world – especially on battlefields or skirmishes.
And thats it.
The basic focuses of my program.
I can repeat them more times in a week if I’d like (rarely doing 2x body prep a week) but I try to get at least one a week done.
It might appear like a slow program when it comes to progress BUT do it for a year and tell me you’ve not progress.
I’ll save you time; you’ll progress.
And you’ll have progressed at what actually gets you better for LARP.
This is why my program is structured this way.
It has 4 sessions of motor-pathway training, 1 for strength of the joints, and 3x for cardiovascular health.
It can be tweaked for variety too BUT this nearly always comes at cost of something.
Feel free to try it though!
Like I said above, each week I put out a brand new session for each type for everyone to use, for free.
Enjoy them!
If you’d like to get in touch to let me know how you do, that’d be awesome!
I love hearing off you guys!
Always here to help!
Anyways, train hard and see you on the battlefields!
Matt
